Ancient Egypt! A journey through time! Handmade chess set with mother-of-pearl and intricate decoration, featuring ancient Egyptian figures, over 50 years old. I bought it in 1973 from the souvenir shop of the Semiramis hotel in Cairo – the old Semiramis, which had the aura of another era, and not the modern InterContinental that took its place. It will beautifully decorate your buffet or sideboard. Both the chessboard and the pieces are handmade, making each piece unique and different. The two rooks, for example, are not identical. The same applies to all the pieces: each one is unique! The chessboard has some minor wear (small pieces of decoration are missing, see close-ups in the photos and the large original photo). Some pieces had come off their bases and have been reattached with glue that is visible (see close-ups in the photos). It serves more as an exceptional decorative item and less as a chess set for playing. Precisely because they are handmade, the pieces tend to fall rather easily, and for some, the distinction between white and black is not clear. The interior of the chessboard is lined with red velvet (I am not sure if it is velvet, it might be suede) and has a rubber band for securing each piece. An antique exclusively for serious collectors and those interested in ancient Egypt!
