Authentic historical engravings from the 18th century by the German engraver Johann Caspar Weinrauch (1764–1828), known for his detailed historical compositions and the neoclassical style of the period.
These are authentic prints, in very good condition, mounted in an elegant antique frame measuring 28×33 cm.
Left engraving (1794)
Alexander the Great condemns Croesus to the fire, while at the bottom the instructive saying of Solon is inscribed: "Do not praise anyone before the end." The scene is characteristic of the European Enlightenment, which revived classical historical examples as moral lessons. The multiple figures, dramatic movement, and intense shading are typical features of Weinrauch.
Right engraving (1793)
The Bohemian uprising of 1618, when the Protestants of Bohemia stormed Prague Castle and threw the emperor’s envoys out the window (the Defenestration of Prague), which triggered the Thirty Years’ War. The scene is depicted with theatricality and multiple figures, a characteristic of Weinrauch’s technique.
The works are in very good condition for their age, on clean paper, with legible inscriptions. They are mounted in an old elegant frame, ready to hang on a wall. The back side, the beige paper that closes the frame, has tears near the frame (see photos).
