He took his first painting lessons in Athens near Konstantinos Parthenis (1921 – 1922). In 1922, while in Paris, he began studies in French and Greek philology at the Sorbonne, while also attending the Ranson Academy and the engraving workshop of Dimitris Galanis. He remained in the French capital until 1934, making occasional trips to Greece. As early as 1923, he began exhibiting with participation in the “Salon of the Independents,” where he exhibited in subsequent years until 1926. In 1927, he held his first solo exhibition in Paris at the “Percier” gallery, and the following year at the “Stratigopoulou” hall in Athens with sculptor Michalis Tompros as co-exhibitor. During 1936-1937, he collaborated on the publication of the magazine “To Trito Mati,” where he published translations of texts and articles. In 1937, he began working with scenography, designing sets and costumes for a performance at the Marika Kotopouli Theatre. He then collaborated with the New School of Dramatic Art of Sokratis Karantinos (1938), the National Theatre (1950), the Modern Greek Ballet of Rallou Mánou (1950), the Matéi School (1952), and Covent Garden in London (1961). In 1941, he was elected professor at the School of Architects of the National Technical University of Athens, where he taught drawing and composition until 1958. His first retrospective exhibition was held in 1946 at the British Council in Athens, followed by a retrospective in 1973 at the National Gallery of Athens with 164 works. In 1949, he exhibited with the group “Armos,” of which he was a founding member, and in 1950, he participated in the Venice Biennale with seventeen works. Meanwhile, he continued to hold solo exhibitions in cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, and from 1958, he collaborated with the Iola Gallery, exhibiting in New York, Paris, Geneva, and Milan. In 1973, he was elected a member of the Academy of Athens, in 1979, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the School of Architecture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and in 1986, he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of London. That same year, the artist’s donation to the National Gallery was made, including forty-five of his works. In 1992, in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, he founded the Hatzikyriakou-Gika Museum in Athens.

A person with diverse intellectual and artistic interests, he also engaged in engraving, book illustration, sculpture — a retrospective exhibition of his sculptural work was held in 1984 at the “To Trito Mati” hall in Athens — and also gave many lectures and published studies and articles on art and aesthetics. Gika utilized cubist and constructivist expressions in his painting, combined with figures from Greek art, achieving a purely personal synthesis of European avant-garde and domestic traditional elements.
